Sioux Newberry has been surprising audiences since she first cut her teeth as a hip-hop artist while attending University in Guelph, Ontario. Spending sleepless nights spitting, cussing and harmonizing her way through performances with prominent DJs in the Toronto area, she learned to find solace in the charms of folk songwriting and classical vocal training. "In fact," says this small-town darling, "I have always seen hip-hop as a tool for learning to write better folk music." Today, where the styles of jazz, country, folk-rock, hip-hop and accapella foot stomp meet, Sioux emerges as a student of reflection, offering songs and stories that consistently demand that her listeners look both inward and outward.

In addition to her solo work, Sioux's many musical projects include writing and performing as an MC/vocalist for the Guelph-based HipHop collective ANTIKNOWLEDGE and touring with the elusive David Newberry and the Charismatic Megafauna. February 2008 will see the rise of "Newberry vs. Newberry", a new show and CD touring from Ontario to the Maritimes by Sioux and her brother David (www.newberryvsnewberry.com). The tour will kick off with a CD Release Party right here in Peterborough February 1st, 2008 at The Spill. This is will be a multi-showcase event and doubles as an art-opening for local photographer Alex Atfield (www.photofocal.com), with proceeds supporting the development of an eco-driven website www.howgreen.ca.
