Greg Wells grew up in Peterborough, Ontario. He played drums and piano at 3 years old. Taught first by his mother and grandmother, Greg studied piano with local teachers and then at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. When a bone disease kept him in a wheelchair as a young teenager, Greg spent his time playing and listening to music. During this period he taught himself guitar, bass, and also studied orchestral percussion (marimba, vibraphone, tympani). He joined every band from the local symphony orchestra to jazz, reggae and rock bands.

After high school he attended the Humber College Music program in Toronto. Greg did session work in Toronto and got the bug for record production after working on Canadian music icon Kim Mitchell's "Rockland" record.
