The Dumbells been inducted into the Peterborough
Pathway of Fame in Del
Crary Park
The Dumbells were born in the trenches of W. W. 1. They were put
together by Capt. Merton Plunkett who was recruited to assemble an
entertainment troupe to raise morale at the front lines. Plunkett
had a keen eye for talent and recruited musicians, comedians,
singers and dancers, indeed any soldier who he discovered had
exceptional entertainment skills. Two of the most notable additions
were his brothers Albert and Morley. The Dumbells were such a
talented and successful group that Merton decided to turn the
Dumbells professional after the war to tour Europe and North
America. The Dumbells played sold out theatres from Broadway to Los
Angeles, and St. Johns to Victoria where they quickly became matinee
and recording idols. Their tours lasted into the early 1930`s After
he left showbusiness Morley Plunkett moved to Peterborough to pursue
a career outside the entertainment field. In 2000 Morley Plunkett
was inducted into the Peterborough Walk of Fame for his contribution
to the Arts via his connection with the world famous Dumbells.
