It's just a little over 36 years since Downchild emerged from
Toronto's gritty Grossman's Tavern. It's been a long journey,
marked with good times and hard times, triumph and tragedy, a lot of
laughs and a few tears - and, through it all, an amazing amount of
great music.
The band is the brainchild of
songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player Donnie Walsh, who's known
as "Mr. Downchild" (after a classic blues song by the late
Sonny Boy Williamson).
With a new burst of creative energy,
Downchild released its 14th album - and possibly the best yet....
"Come On In" features Downchild's distinctive sound, 13
brand new tunes, and - for the first time - contributions from just
a few of the friends the band has made over the years.
Guests on the CD include American
blues harmonica pioneer James Cotton, the Fabulous Thunderbirds'
keyboard ace (and former Downchild pianist) Gene Taylor, guitarists
Jeff Healey and Powder Blues Band founder Tom Lavin, and powerhouse
drummer Pentti Glan. Finally, David Gogo rocks out loud and
clear on two of the 13 tracks.
The guests added their own unique
styles to the new record, but it's still a "Downchild
record" - and the band's attitude remains as constant as its
familiar sound: This is music for dancing, for laughing, for
partying, and sometimes (check out "Dropping Like Flies"
and "Scars") music for thinking.
Are there future Downchild
"standards" here? There certainly are: "Jump
Right Up," "Tonight I Want to Dance With You,"
"Now You're Hooked," "There's a Blues Band
There" and the title song are all earning applause at the
band's shows.
