Martin, who moved to the Kendal area in 1985 from London, Ont, was a
prolific and talented artist who did not seek fame. It found him
near the end of his life – he died in 1995 – when he portrayed
an accordion-playing clown in the 4th Line Theatre’s The
Great Farini. While always a captivating performer, his talents,
particularly as a writer of songs and theatre had the greatest
influence on Peterborough artists; a number of his scripts have been
staged here and a tribute recording of his songs was issued in1997.
Jim Yates writes: In the
picture above, Bernie Martin is playing his home-made Hammered
dulcimer at the 1990 Cobourg Waterfront Festival. He played in
a workshop with Terry Tufts and some other musicians that year and
when Terry played a slide blues number, Statesboro' Blues, Bernie
backed him up on hammered dulcimer. Terry said,"That's
the first time I've ever heard anyone play Chuck Berry licks on a
hammered dulcimer."
