Allan Kirby, McCormick's banjo player
began his performing career in the late 1950's, playing guitar in a
rockabilly band. In the 1970's Allan played rhythm guitar in a
number of dance bands and was a percussionist in a concert band.
Throughout the 1980's and early1990's, Allan worked as a pedal steel
guitar player, recording, and travelling with several country and
country/rock ensembles.
However, Allan has always enjoyed bluegrass music. For four years in the late 1980's he hosted a popular weekly bluegrass radio show on Peterborough's 'Country 105' radio, and he began playing the banjo in 1996. Although bluegrass music is foremost, he has always enjoyed all music genres, from classical to jazz. Allan pursued his passion for music in his education. He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from Queen's University and a Masters degree in Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University. When not playing banjo with
McCormick, he teaches music privately and conducts group music
workshops; as well, he researches, writes, and lectures on the
subject of traditional music. Allan has had articles published in
the 1998 and 2002 editions of the Canadian Journal for Traditional
Music, and he regularly contributes CD reviews, book reviews, and
feature articles to the Canadian Folk Music Bulletin. Allan has
lectured, on the topic of traditional music (including bluegrass)
and music history, at Queen's University (1998, 1999, 2001) and
Carleton University (2002, 2003) and at several major music
conferences, University of Winnipeg in 1998, the Toronto Sheraton
Cente in 2000, and the University of Western Ontario in 2003. Allan
continues to develop his hard driving banjo style to suit the
traditional bluegrass music that McCormick performs. As well as
playing with McCormick, Allan also performs eclectic acoustic music
with Jim Yates as part of the duo Kirby and Yates. Kirby and Yates
have recently released a CD titled Sittin' In the Kitchen which will
be available at both Kirby and Yates and McCormick gigs. PETERBOROUGH
